About Us

Become a part of Chautauqua's rich history...

The Carey traces its history to the early 1880's when the first portion of the Inn was erected and named in honor of the Victorian poets Alice and Phoebe Carey. Over the years the Carey grew with the last section completed in 1895.

The Carey Inn has hosted Chautauquans for more than 140 years. Perhaps the most famous was George Gershwin, who completed his ever popular Concerto in F Major while staying at the Carey. Two rooms that he occupied are still available to guests today.
